Of the Ancestors
Archaeology, Burial Grounds and Aboriginal Peoples

Under our feet are the remains of peoples who have lived here ever since the
glaciers receded northward – more than 12,000 years ago. These people were
the ancestors of the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet and Passamaquoddy. Their artefacts are
of interest to those who seek understanding of the present from the lives of the
past, including archaeologists and historians. Today, some land owners are
learning that ancient burial grounds or sites of interest lie on their properties.
Should these sites be disturbed? Do they differ from modern cemeteries? Are there
laws that protect these ancient remains? What can Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
people learn together from this, so that we will develop respectful and right
relationships?

The Aboriginal Rights Coalition – Atlantic (ARC-A) is the only cross-cultural Aboriginal
justice organization in our region. It is made up of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
members, and encourages dialogue and activities of peace and justice in this region. New
people are very welcome!
